Riff generates guitar solos over any chord progression using AI-powered music theory. This guide walks you through creating your first solo.
Create an Account
Head to riff.cool and sign up with your email. You can start generating solos immediately on the free plan — no credit card required.
Generate Your First Solo
- Open the Generator — After signing in you land on the Generate page.
- Enter a Chord Progression — Type chords separated by spaces, e.g.
Am F C G. Riff understands major, minor, diminished, augmented, and seventh chords. - Pick a Genre — Choose from Blues, Rock, Jazz, Metal, Country, or Funk. Each genre changes the phrasing, note selection, and rhythm feel.
- Choose a Scale — The free plan includes Major and Minor. Pro unlocks Dorian, Mixolydian, Phrygian, Lydian, Harmonic Minor, Pentatonic Major, Pentatonic Minor, and Blues scales.
- Hit Generate — Riff detects the key of your progression automatically and builds a solo that follows the chord changes.
Read the Output
Your solo appears in two forms:
- Interactive Fretboard — A visual guitar neck showing every note. Click any note to see its pitch, string, and fret.
- Tab Notation — Standard guitar tablature you can read and practice right away.
