FAQ
Common questions about using Riff.
General
What is Riff?
Riff is an AI-powered guitar solo generator. You enter a chord progression, choose a genre and scale, and Riff generates a playable guitar solo with tab notation and an interactive fretboard.
How does the AI work?
Riff uses music theory algorithms — not machine learning — to generate solos. It analyzes your chord progression, detects the key, selects lick patterns from a genre-specific library, and transposes them to fit each chord. The result is a solo with real phrasing, motifs, and musicality.
Do I need to know music theory?
No. You can type any chord progression (e.g. Am F C G) and Riff handles the theory. But if you do know theory, you'll get more out of the scale and genre options.
Solos & Generation
Why do solos sound different each time?
The generator uses controlled randomness. It picks from a library of lick patterns and applies variation in rhythm, note selection, and phrasing. Same inputs can produce different solos — generate multiple times to find one you like.
Can I edit a generated solo?
Yes. The interactive fretboard lets you add new notes and remove existing ones. Your edits are reflected in the tab notation.
What chord formats are supported?
Major (C), minor (Cm), diminished (Cdim), augmented (Caug), major 7th (Cmaj7), minor 7th (Cm7), and dominant 7th (C7). Any root note from A through G# is supported.
What does "strictness" do?
Strictness controls how closely the solo follows the scale:
- Strict — Only uses notes from the selected scale
- Loose — Allows occasional passing tones outside the scale
- Chromatic — Freely uses chromatic approach notes for a more adventurous sound
