Interactive Fretboard
Riff displays your generated solo on an interactive guitar fretboard. Each note appears as a dot on the correct string and fret, giving you a visual map of the solo.
Viewing Notes
After generating a solo, the fretboard shows all notes laid out across the neck. Notes are color-coded and positioned on the string and fret where they should be played.
Each note displays:
- Fret number on the dot
- String position (vertical placement on the fretboard)
Click any note to see detailed information including the pitch name, string number, fret number, and whether it's a chord tone.
Adding Notes
You can add your own notes to the solo using the fretboard:
- Click an empty position on the fretboard
- The Add Note modal appears showing the string and fret you selected
- Confirm to insert the note into the solo
Added notes integrate with the existing tab and playback.
Editing Notes
Click an existing note to open the Note Info modal. From here you can view the note's details and remove it if needed.
Fretboard Layout
The fretboard displays:
- 6 strings arranged vertically (low E at bottom, high E at top in standard tuning)
- Frets arranged horizontally from the nut (fret 0) outward
- Fret markers at standard positions (3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 21)
- Note dots showing pitch positions
The fretboard adjusts automatically when you change tunings — string labels update to reflect the open notes of the selected tuning.
Tips
- Use the fretboard to visualize patterns — you'll often see the generator using pentatonic box shapes, triadic arpeggios, and scale runs.
- Compare tunings by generating the same progression in different tunings to see how note positions shift.
- The fretboard is a great learning tool — study the positions to build muscle memory for the licks you like.
